MTA Releases Grand Central Apple Store Renderings

By Ben Fractenberg | August 15, 2011 9:05pm

MIDTOWN — The MTA released renderings of the planned Grand Central Apple store while the company began work on the new location Monday.

The rendering shows an open-air store, with Apple's standard light wood tables and chairs that seem to blend in almost seamlessly with the pale stone and chandelier-lit background in Grand Central's east mezzanine over the main concourse. There are no glass walls and the only evidence of Apple is the lines of computer monitors and "genius bar" staffers standing behind the counters.

The structure does not appear to alter the architecture of the terminal in any significant way.

“It maintains Grand Central as the iconic structure and place that it is,” Metro-North Railroad President Howard Permut reportedly said at a MTA railroad committee meeting, according to the The Wall Street Journal.

Construction on the 23,000 square foot location is slated to take four months to complete.

After getting a new iPod, shoppers will able to get a burger with the MTA approving a new Shake Shack location in the dining concourse on the lower level of Grand Central.

The tech company is set to pay Metrazur $5 million to terminate its lease early, and would then pay the MTA $800,000 in rent in the first year. That amount would increase to $1.043 million in the last year of their 10-year deal. The company would also make substantial investments to retrofit the space, according to MTA Director of Real Estate Jeffrey Rosen.
