GREENWICH VILLAGE — The cops threw a party in the Village Tuesday night, and everyone was invited.

Members of the Greenwich Village's Sixth Precinct served up free hot dogs, hamburgers and bottled water as part of National Night Out, an annual event which aims to encourage police/community partnerships.

Longtime Village resident and community activist Terri Cude said she appreciated the block party, which was held in Father Demo Square, on Sixth Avenue between Bleecker and Carmine streets.

"I love being out here. This is such a good neighborhood with such a strong sense of community," Cude said.

Sixth Precinct Commanding Officer Brandon del Pozo focused on an objective of the night: crime prevention.

"We're in the fortunate situation, like most New Yorkers, of enjoying public safety," del Pozo said. "National Night Out reminds us that safety shouldn't be taken for granted, and it is a collective responsibility."

National Night Out has run for 28 years across the country. Its sponsor, the National Association of Town Watch, estimated that more than 37 million people participated in 2010.
