CHELSEA — Most people who walk the High Line would agree it’s more than just an elevated walkway — it's a venue that's breathed new life into Manhattan's west side.
Now a new book by the park's co-founders is shedding new light on the vision that was born in 1999, and showing how it developed into the attraction that exists today.
"High Line: The Inside Story of New York City’s Park in the Sky" chronicles Joshua David and Robert Hammond's struggles and triumphs in making their project happen. The book, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, hits stores in October, and can already be pre-ordered online.
The narrative includes accounts of a design contest for the structure, urban planning concerns after the September 11 attacks, and Mayor Bloomberg’s support for the project, according to a press release for the book. It also includes 250 pages of High Line color photos.
And, in keeping with the men’s dedication to their project, all the book’s proceeds go to the maintenance of the High Line, according to a statement.
