Museum of the City of New York Announces Summer Music Series

By DNAinfo Staff on July 8, 2011 5:49pm  | Updated on July 8, 2011 11:05pm

MANHATTAN — For an evening of music, dance, drinks and – of course – New York City history, check out Live at 1220 Fifth, a new summer music series at the Museum of the City of New York.

The weekly event, to be held Wednesdays between 6 and 9 p.m. beginning July 13, will feature live musical performances, dancing and cocktails on the museum’s iconic terrace overlooking Central Park.

Musical styles will reflect the varied sounds of the city, ranging from Latin jazz to funk to classic rock, according to a statement announcing the series.

Next Wednesday’s entertainment will be provided by songstress Sophia Urista. The Know Band featuring Carla Scott will cap the series on August 31.

Admission ($10 for museum members and $15 for non-members) includes one free beverage and entrance to the museum's exhibitions.

See below for the full listing of performances:

July 13: Sophia Urista

Featured artist at the Fort Greene Music Fest on July 15, and a Showtime network performer, this talented musician brings a unique blend of soul, funk and blues to her lively and dynamic act.

July 20: Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Aché

Bobby Sanabria, composer, arranger, percussionist and educator, is a multiple Grammy nominee who has recorded and performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente and many other music legends. His sound incorporates a multi-cultural array of musical strains in Latin jazz.

July 27: Baby Soda

Baby Soda is on the cutting edge of a new movement loosely known as street jazz, with an eclectic set of influences ranging from New Orleans brass bands, jug music, southern gospel and hot jazz. This Brooklyn jazz band is known for its impromptu concerts at sites around the city.

August 3: Juliana Riccardi Band

Blending alternative rock and ethereal pop, this New York native will combine her lively original band act with the now-vintage, classic rock of the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, including songs by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and other great sounds.

August 10: Mamarazzi and Tavi Fields

Mamarazzi plays a unique brand of African-rhythm-infused funk music. Their sound incorporates elements of jazz, Afro-beat, rock and African percussion with keyboards, guitars, and horns. In 2010, the band incorporated poetry slam and hip hop artist Tavi Fields, adding a unique Brooklyn hip hop flare to their sound.

August 17: The Tickled Pinks

Reminiscent of the Andrew Sisters, this act features boogie-woogie — a retro style and sultry sound that also includes pre-war “barbershop quartet” harmonies. The band includes — in addition to the three female vocalists — brass, keyboard and an upright bass.

August 24: Devon Craig Johnson

Jazz guitarist, rock drummer and DJ Devon Craig Johnson will treat audiences to jazz, classical, hip hop, and modern pop. This artist brings an eclectic mix of contemporary styles to his performances.

August 31: The Know Band featuring Carla Scott

A blend of pop, rock and funk hits.
