EAST VILLAGE — The college professor and East Village resident gunned down at her Pennsylvania home over the weekend in a mass shooting died Thursday from her injuries.

Monica Shay, 58, of East 10th Street, was among five people shot Saturday at the home she shared with her husband in Bechtelsville, Pa., by a gunman who was later killed by police.

Shay's nephew, Joseph Shay, 43, and 2-year-old Gregory Bosco, also died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Her husband, Paul Shay, 64, and Joseph Shay's girlfriend, Kathryn Erdmann, 37, were both critically wounded in the shooting.

The Pratt Institute, where Monica Shay served as associate professor and director of the school's Arts and Cultural Management program, announced the tragic news Thursday.

"The Pratt Institute community is shocked and deeply saddened by Professor Monica Shay's untimely death," the school's president Thomas F. Schutte said in a statement.

"Professor Shay was an esteemed educator who demonstrated inspiring leadership as head of the Institute's arts and cultural management program. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and friends and to all of those at the Institute whose lives she touched.”

Friends and colleagues paid tribute to the Shays outside their East 10th Street home Tuesday, speaking of the couple's activism and involvement in the community.

The alleged killer, Mark Richard Geisenheyner, was shot to death during a standoff with a SWAT team in southeastern Pennsylvania Monday.

Geisenheyner was reportedly angry with Paul Shay because of an alleged insurance scam involving Shay's home in 2006.
