INWOOD — Summer’s official start next week also heralds the arrival of free yoga in Inwood Hill Park and what a local yoga studio hopes will become two new favorites — family Capoiera and Tai Chi classes.

Kicking off with a summer solstice celebration, local yoga studio Bread and Yoga plans to bring back its annual sun salutations on the Indian Road lawn on Tuesdays evenings at the park and introduce the additional free summer-long fitness events for families and fitness enthusiasts.

On Wednesday evenings through the summer the studio will offer classes teaching family Capoeira, a traditional Brazilian art form that blends martial arts, dance, music and acrobatics.

And on Thursday mornings, park-goers can wake up to practice Tai Chi, the Chinese martial art known for its health benefits, including tension and stress relief.

Bread and Yoga, located on the corner of West 207th Street and Broadway, has been open since 2009 when owner Marcella Xavier began offering free yoga classes in the park as a way to bring together the community and introduce new fitness methods to new students.

“Holding the class in the park exposes yoga to neighborhood people who normally wouldn’t try,” she said. “And making it free breaks barriers for people.”

All classes are held on Indian Road lawn in Inwood Hill Park, near the 218th Street entrance.

In case of rain, yoga classes will be held at the studio at 4951 Broadway on the second floor. Capoiera and Tai Chi will be canceled when it rains. Updates will be posted on Twitter or Facebook.
