Tavern on the Green to Host Movies This Summer

UPPER WEST SIDE — Once a go-to spot for wedding receptions, Tavern on the Green's terrace will host movies, lectures and fitness classes this summer, the Parks Department announced Monday.

Free activities start Wednesday. First up is a 7:30 p.m. screening of "Entre Nos," an independent film whose co-directors will be on hand to introduce the movie. Free films will be shown throughout the summer.

The Parks Department also plans lives music, lectures, fitness classes, and weekend children's activities at the Tavern's 7,000 square foot terrace, which overlooks Central Park's Sheep Meadow.

Other movies on the schedule include: "Between the Folds" on June 29; "Mad Hot Ballroom" on July 13; "Food.Curated" on July 27; "Appetite City" August 10; and "Carol Channing: Larger than Life" August 17.

The free entertainment marks the latest step in the Parks Department's transformation of Tavern on the Green, the landmark restaurant that closed in 2010.

After a renovation, the storied site was reborn last fall as a visitors center peddling T-shirts and mugs.

Four gourmet food trucks — Ladle of Love, Rickshaw Dumplings, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Pera Turkish Tacos — now sell high-end treats on the Tavern terrace.

Tavern on the Green was reborn as a visitors center with public restrooms and a gift shop in the fall of 2010.
