MANHATTAN — Start the Memorial Day weekend early and head to the Whitney Museum of America Art on the corner of 75th and Madison. The museum is free from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday.
According to the museum's website, they are offering the one-time free pass to "invite the public to enjoy two of the benefits of Whitney membership: free admission and a 10% discount at the Whitney store."
A show by Brooklyn-based musician, programmer and artist Cory Arcangel featuring hacked video games and remixed Internet videos opened at the museum on Thursday and will run through September.
The institution, which has been in its iconic Marcel Breuer-designed building since 1966, is offering the free day in celebration the groundbreaking earlier this week for its new building in the Meatpacking District at the base of the High Line.
The Whitney's new $720 million building, designed by famous architect Renzo Piano, is slated to open in 2015 at Gansevoort and Washington Streets.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will take over the Whitney's landmark Upper East Side building where it will show its modern and contemporary art.
