WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Break out your sneakers and prepare to jam at the second annual Kidfit in the Heights event on Saturday.

Families will try out all sorts of free fitness classes like Tai Chi, belly dancing, double dutch, Pilates, jump rope, hula hooping and more while learning how to keep fit at the second annual uptown "fitness and nutrition fair."

Organizers from PS/IS 187 Parents Association, Vive Tu Vida/CHALK and the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood have teamed up with local fitness professionals to introduce families to a new world of exercise in addition to sports classics like soccer, basketball and baseball.

Nutrition specialists and health practitioners will also be on hand to discuss the best way to eat well and stay healthy, with cooking demonstrations planned throughout the day.

Healthy snacks and drinks will also be available.

Organizer Susan Saar said she is hopeful events of this kind will inspire families to workout and eat healthy together, especially in Washington Heights where the statistics for obese children are very high.

"We must change the way we feed ourselves and our families," Saar said. "It goes all the way down to changing the legislation about growing our food and our standards to keep it pure. It has to go that deep."

KIDFIT will be held at the PS/IS 187 school yard at 349 Cabrini Boulevard on Saturday, April 30, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be held at the same time on Sunday, May 1.
