GREENWICH VILLAGE — A small fire ripped through a nail salon above the famed Village Vanguard club in Greenwich Village Saturday morning, fire officials said.
The electrical blaze erupted just after 11 a.m. on the second floor of 180 Seventh Ave. South, near Perry Street and was brought under control about a half hour later, according to the FDNY.
About 25 people were evacuated from the salon, according to Tony Arias, who owns Rivoli Pizza next door.
"I think they were a little bit scared," said Arias, 70, who saw some smoke coming from a back window but no flames.
Arias said that there was some minor water damage to his shop, but he was more frustrated about having to close as electricians worked to restore his power.
"It’s bad bad," he said. "Friday and Saturday are my busiest days."
The salon's owner, Jodi Kaufman, said that damage to her shop was limited to a storage room.
Deborah Gordon, owner of the Village Vanguard, said she got a call from her landlord at about 11 a.m. and rushed over.
The venue, which experienced minor water damage, was closed at the time and is expected to reopen tonight.
"It’s a little stressful," she said, "But we've seen it much worse."
There were no injuries.
