MANHATTAN — Police believe murdered radio and TV personality DJ Megatron was out trying to buy marijuana when he was gunned down near his home in Staten Island Sunday, according to published reports.
Megatron, whose real name is Corey McGriff, a longtime deejay at Hot 97 and regular host of BET's "106 and Park", was reportedly on the phone with a friend around 2 a.m. Sunday and said he was out buying pot when his call was abruptly cut short, the New York Daily News reported.
Witnesses said they saw at least three young men leave the scene and police were not ruling out an act of random violence or even a possible hit, the New York Post reported.
The popular DJ left behind three children, who family said were struggling to understand their father's death.
"They're trying to cope with the situation, especially the 11-year-old," McGriff's mother, Louvenia, told the Post.
"She's very hurt and upset and doesn't understand why anyone would want to do that to her dad," she said.
Friends and family of the 32-year-old DJ planned to hold an anti-violence rally in his honor at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at 71 Osgood Avenue in Staten Island near where McGriff was killed.
