MANHATTAN — A piece of steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center will be used to create a memorial sculpture for Christina-Taylor Green, the 9-year-old victim of the Tucson massacre who happened to be born on Sept. 11, 2001.

The 272 pound beam was hauled from JFK Wednesday morning and shipped to the artist's workshop in Pennsylvania, a spokesman for the Port Authority, which donated the artifact, said.

When the piece, part of the "Freedom's Angel of Steadfast Love" series, is completed, it will be shipped to Arizona and erected in the park where Green played little league.

"That this angel would be made from the remnants of the 9/11 attacks, makes this tribute especially touching," Green's family said in a statement about the memorial. "Christina-Taylor wanted to be a symbol of hope for those touched by our nation’s great tragedy on 9/11, the day she was born."

Green was the granddaughter of Dallas Green, a former manager for both the Yankees and Mets. She was the only girl on her little league team during the 2010 season, according to a tribute to her on Canyon Del Oro Little League website.

Her life came to a tragic end on January 8, 2010, when gunman Jared Loughner opened fire at public event for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, killing six people and wounding a dozen others.
