MIDTOWN — A mattress caught fire on the fifth floor of a Midtown West walkup Tuesday morning, an FDNY official at the scene said.

The resident of the apartment, at 332 West 51st St., told firefighters he went to the men's room and when he came back his apartment was on fire, according to Battalion Chief Greg Bierster.

The Fire Marshall was scheduled to come by later that morning to investigate the cause of the fire, according to the battalion chief.

The FDNY was alerted to the fire at 7:38 a.m. and declared it under control 21 minutes later. There were no injuries.

Bierster said the blaze was contained to the bedroom where it began thanks to a properly functioning sprinkler system.

Residents on the fourth and fifth floors were evacuated from the building, he said.
