MANHATTAN — A man who was caught red-handed trying to steal hundreds of dollars worth of goods from Century 21 Sunday was granted diplomatic immunity from prosecution and the case was dropped, the New York Post reported.

Oleg Sharifov allegedly switched the price tags on a wallet and paid for the lower price at the register, the Post reported. Security guards who stopped him the found another $443.62 worth of items in his bag and called the police, the paper reported.

But police officers from the First Precinct found that Sharifov was in town with a diplomatic delegation from the Republic of Georgia and had no choice but to void the arrest, the Post reported.

Sharifov, who is a citizen of Georgia, was released to the custody of the Georgian mission to the UN who said they were investigating the incident, according to the Post.
