UPPER MANHATTAN — In response to a growing gang problem in Upper Manhattan, officials plan to hold a gang awareness forum in March to teach parents how to identify gangs and signs their kids may be involved with gangs.

The NYPD Gang and School Safety divisions will join the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and 34th Precinct on Tuesday, March 15.

In late January, Upper Manhattan politicians announced they had assembled a new task force to address the rise in crime in the area, voicing concern about gang activity in Washington Heights.

The two task force will aim to include state and federal law enforcement in managing crime in the area, because some of the suspected gang activity might interest the FBI, officials said on Jan. 24.

"There’s no space in our community for our youth to be involved in gangs," State Sen. Adriano Espaillat said, blaming an uptick in murders this year on a growing problem with youth gangs in Upper Manhattan.

"These are not your West Side Story gangs, like the Jets and the Sharks," he later added. "These are sophisticated gangs that are involved in the drug trade and are violent."

Those interested in learning more about the event can contact Officer Haydee Pabey 212-927-0576 at the 34th Precinct or Joselinne Minaya 212-335-9589 at the Manhattan D.A.’s office for further information.

P.S. 152, Dyckman Valley School, 93 Nagle Avenue, between Sickles and Ellwood streets. Tuesday, March 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
