INWOOD — A 20-year-old man who was clearing snow off the sidewalk in front of a Department of Sanitation garage fell 10 feet through an unsecured subway grate Wednesday.

Eric Pagan was shoveling snow in front of the garage at West 216th Street and 10th Avenue when he tumbled through the 1-train grate and into a ventilation shaft, the New York Daily News reported.

Pagan, who was wearing a hard hat, suffered a gash to the head and was taken to Harlem Hospital where he remained in stable condition late Wednesday afternoon, the News reported.

"It was his hood and his hat that saved him from cracking his melon," Pagan's uncle, Joseph Rodriguez, told the News.
