LOWER MANHATTAN — Police are searching for a man who they believe stole a car and then ran into the subway near City Hall Wednesday morning.

Police pursued the alleged car thief into the Chambers Street/City Hall subway station, where he may have run onto the tracks.

"We’re just trying to figure out where he is before he harms himself or anyone else," said an officer with the NYPD’s Transit District 2. "It’s a pretty big complex."

The station at Chambers and Centre streets serves the J, Z, 4, 5 and 6 lines. Trains appeared to be running through the station without disruption by about 11:30 a.m.

It was not clear where the alleged thief left the stolen car.

An NYPD spokesman did not have information about the incident.
