UPPER MANHATTAN — The 34th Police Precinct Council is putting a new spin on the motto "to serve and protect" with its annual Turkey Drive, aimed at keeping tables bountiful throughout Inwood and Washington Heights this Thanksgiving.

The Council, which is responsible for coordinating work between the community and police, organized the drive with local nonprofit Inwood Community Services. They are asking residents of the area to donate as little as $5 toward purchasing "turkeys for low-income families across Washington Heights & Inwood within the confines of the 34th Precinct."

Inwood Community Services has donated more than 300 turkeys to local low-income families in previous years, according to the Council, which collected $500 last year toward the effort.

"This year we would like to raise just as much as last year but we need your help," said George Espinal, president of the Council.

Those interested in contributing can do so online by clicking "donate" on the lefthand corner of the Council’s website, or by writing a personal check made out to the 34th Precinct Community Council, c/o Treasurer Auburn & President Espinal, 4295 Broadway, New York, NY 10033.

Volunteers are also needed when turkeys are handed out to families on November 23 at the Inwood Boxing Academy at 651 Academy Street. Those interested can call the Council at 212-942-0043.
