UPPER WEST SIDE — The Upper West Side's Beacon School made history Sunday when both its boys and girls soccer teams won the Public School Athletic League Class A championship.

The girls team bested Staten Island's Tottenville High School 2-0, and the boys team triumphed over Queen's Francis Lewis High School 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Girls coach Kevin Jacobs said the win felt "fantastic," especially because his team had seen two other championships slip away during penalty kicks two years running. Beacon girls last won the PSAL championship in 2008.

"We've been very, very close," Jacobs said. "It's kind of heartbreaking to be so close and not win. In both games it was the difference of one kick."

Jacobs said those last-minute losses weighed heavily on the minds of his senior players going into Sunday's final.

But once on the field, Beacon girls showed focus, with freshman Camila Kirtzman scoring in the first half and junior Jenny Angione providing the second goal.

The boys' team "provided all the drama" on Sunday, said Jacobs.

Scoreless at the end of two halves and two overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks, with Beacon prevailing 4-3.

Jacobs said the two teams usually celebrate at the end of each season, but the double championship win calls for a larger-scale party.

"We always have some kind of team dinner, but we'll have to do it a little bit bigger this year," Jacobs said.
