MANHATTAN — Charlie Sheen was allegedly drunk, naked and disorderly when police arrived at his room at the Plaza Hotel early Tuesday morning, a police source said.

The actor, who had been "out partying" before returning to the hotel with an unidentified woman, became angry and trashed his room after noticing that his wallet was missing, the New York Post reported. The damage totaled about $7,000 sources told the Post.

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton said the unidentified woman was actually a prostitute who claimed the star's outburst was due to cocaine.

Police said they received a 1:30 a.m. 911 call from the hotel about an intoxicated male, but they would not confirm that Sheen was the subject of the call. Officers said the man, who other reports identify as Sheen, appeared to be drunk and in a confused state. The man was taken to New York Presbyterian for a psychological evaluation, police officials said.

"Charlie was incoherent but started screaming slurs at the cops," a source told Life and Style Magazine. "They recognized him immediately and gave him two options: they could take him to the hospital or take him down to the station. Charlie chose the hospital."

A spokesperson for the hospital would not confirm the information.

Sheen's rep said an allergic reaction was to blame for the "Two and a Half Men" star's trip to the hospital, according to TMZ.

"What we are able to determine is that Charlie had an adverse allergic reaction to some medication and was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to be released tomorrow," Stan Rosenfield told the website.

Sheen has been in New York since this weekend on a trip with ex-wife Denise Richards and the couple's two daughters. Richards and the girls were also guests at the Plaza but were staying in another room — the famed Eloise Suite, according to TMZ.com.

A call to hotel security from the pink-and-white-themed Eloise Suite prompted the 911 call, according to the Post.

Hundreds of tourists, media people and Midtown workers on their lunch breaks were gathered outside the Plaza after word of the scandal broke.

"We were walking out and one of the hotel workers told us it was chaos outside. We asked why and he said 'It's not for me to say,'" said Kelly Iwai, 37, a Canadian tourist who was staying at the Plaza with her husband.

Asked if she would join the crowd of onlookers, Iwai said, "For Charlie Sheen's hooker? No."

Other tourists, who had joined the crowd believing it was for Vice President Joe Biden (who was spotted at a nearby hotel), shared in Iwai's disappointment upon learning of the scandal.

Still others said they were thrilled to have caught a glimpse of the scandal.

"I think it's enhanced [our trip]," explained Sherri Lepitzki, another Canadian tourist, who posed for pictures with reporters outside the hotel.

This isn't the first — or even third — time the actor's private life has been more dramatic than his professional one. Earlier this year he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault charges against his current wife, real estate investor Brooke Mueller. Sheen has been in and out of rehab several times since 1998.
