UPPER EAST SIDE — The Department of Education will present a new school zoning plan to the Upper East Side Thursday.

Parents upset about school overcrowding and children being placed far from their homes had demanded that the department redraw the boundaries of the neighborhood's eight school zones so that the distribution of students at the area's schools would be more even.

Parents hope that the new zones will prevent some of the long wait-lists and uncertainties that students faced last spring.

Elizabeth Rose, from the DOE's office of portfolio management, will present the plan and discuss the re-zoning process with parents at a Community Education Council meeting Thursday evening.

In order for the new zones to go into effect for the 2011 school year, the CEC will have to approve the plans by February, said Shino Tanikawa, a member of the council at a Community Board 8 education meeting last month.

Parents will have a chance to ask questions and give input into the proposed new zones beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Robert Wagner Middle School, located at 220 East 76th Street.
