FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A line of local residents and workers stretched all the way around Bowling Green Park Wednesday morning for the annual Adopt A Geranium Day.
In just two hours, the Downtown Alliance dug up and gave away all 4,000 of the red-flowering plants from the park’s garden. The event clears the way for the Alliance and community volunteers to plant tulip bulbs later this month.
"This is our way of involving the community to keep the planting cycle going at the park," said Liz Berger, president of the Downtown Alliance.
The free geraniums attracted a handful of local politicians, including Borough President Scott Stringer, State Sen. Daniel Squadron, Battery Park City Authority Chairman Bill Thompson and Councilwoman Margaret Chin, who donned a pair of gloves before hitting the garden.
The Downtown Alliance's Fall Community Planting Day will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23 in Bowling Green Park.
