LOWER MANHATTAN — A thief stole a $400 iPhone from a 12-year-old boy’s backpack in the P.S./I.S. 89 playground last weekend, police said.

The victim, a TriBeCa resident, left his backpack unattended about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 while playing in the schoolyard at West and Warren Sts., police said. The boy noticed later that day that the phone was missing.

The boy’s father reported the crime two days later and told police there was unauthorized usage on the phone, according to the police report.

Several days earlier, a 29-year-old Brooklyn woman lost her phone while riding the 4 train from Union Square to Bowling Green, police said.

The woman told police she felt someone bump into her on the train about 11 p.m. Sept. 29. When she exited the Bowling Green station, she discovered her $400 iPhone was gone, police said.
