TRIBECA — An identity thief had a chance to get away with stealing $6,000, but he was caught after trying to double his catch, police said.

Helmuth Mora, 43, a Brooklyn resident, allegedly used a stolen debit card and fake ID to withdraw $6,000 from the Bank of America at 260 Greenwich St. about 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, police said.

The teller who helped Mora told police that the accused thief used the correct password to withdraw the cash, and he left without incident.

But then Mora returned 20 minutes later and asked for another $6,000, police said. The teller called the account’s owner, a 43-year-old man from Bloomfield, N.J., and his wife told the teller that the man withdrawing the money was not her husband.

Police arrested Mora and charged him with identity theft, grand larceny, criminal possession of a forged instrument, and criminal possession of stolen property, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney said. His next court date is Jan. 4.
