EAST HARLEM — A police officer suffered a cut to the face after being attacked on East 120th Street Monday night, police said.

An unknown male assailant approached the officer from behind about 8 p.m. near Pleasant Avenue and punched him in the right side of the face, causing a laceration, NYPD sources said.

He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in stable condition, police added.

The officer was citing a man and woman for having a dog off its leash when the attacker snuck up from behind, police added.

Sources added that the puncher likely knew the two people being cited.

The female was in police custody following the incident while the other two remained at large, the NYPD said.

An investigation is ongoing, police added.
