WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Families and urban explorers are invited to attend the annual Little Red Lighthouse Festival this Saturday, where the community will celebrate its prized landmark under the George Washington Bridge.

The festival takes place at the WaHi site famously depicted in the children’s book "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge," and is scheduled to include a special guest reading of the book, performances by the cast of the Broadway hit "Billy Elliott," arts and crafts workshops and lighthouse tours.

The event is sponsored by the Historic Trust of New York City, the Parks Department and Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project, the urban park beautification group that first restored Fort Washington Park, which is home to the lighthouse.

The easiest way to get to the Little Red Lighthouse by subway is to take the A train to 181st Street, get out and walk west across the Henry Hudson Highway over the pedestrian bridge at West 181st Street, and follow the path to the Hudson River.

By bicycle, follow the greenway north along the Hudson River until you reach the bridge. The lighthouse sits beneath the George Washington Bridge.

Bring a camera, the view is spectacular.

Saturday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
