MANHATTAN — NYU's expansion plans make them a frequent target of some Villagers who accuse them of encroaching into the neighborhood — but now the university now has its own set of invaders to contend with.

Tiny, blood-sucking bed bugs have joined the thousands of new and returning students in descending on the school in recent weeks, according to NYU News.

Several school dorms have been hit by the city’s latest scourge, Beth Morningstar, director of strategic assessment and communications, told NYU News. Morningstar declined to identify the blighted dorms, but said that over 90 percent of reported cases reflect paranoid students rather than actual parasites.

"These reports typically come from students who find what they believe to be a bug bite on their skin," she told the student news site. "However, the majority of these reports turn out to be negative."

NYU's bed bug problem comes in spite of the fact that the school invests in so-called "bed bug-proof" mattresses, NYU News reported. Critters can skirt this defense through a rip in the mattress or by taking up residence in the bed’s frame, Morningstar told NYU News.
