UPPER EAST SIDE — Community Board 8 voted to add to the historic district of Park Avenue last week.

The board voted unanimously to add the stretch of buildings between East 86th and East 96th street along Park Avenue to the existing district that covers East 62nd Street to the south side of East 86th Street.

"This is one of the most historic avenues in the world," said Michele Birnbaum, a member of the Community Board 8 Landmarks Committee, of Park Avenue.

"Everybody all over the world knows Park Avenue, this certainly makes sense," Birnbaum said.

The decision was made in part because board members felt the protected architecture south of East 86th Street shared similar characteristics with the stretch leading up to East 96th Street.

The board's recommendation will now go to the city Landmarks Preservation Commission.
