LOWER MANHATTAN— P.S. 234 and the city's education department have reached a tentative agreement that allows the school to continue to use the classrooms at the Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center for the next three years.
As a solution to school overcrowding at P.S. 234, the city had been renting two classrooms from the youth center for the past two years. That contract was due to expire at the end of this school year.
"Having lived in this neighborhood and served this community for 25 years, I have a very strong commitment to the families of Lower Manhattan," the youth center's directo Bob Townley released in a statement.
"People who were close to me in these lease renewal negotiations knew that asking P.S. 234 to leave our space in September was never on the table."
Because the agreement is not final, Townley would not release terms of the agreement, but under the previous deal had the city was paying $45 per square foot.
