UPPER EAST SIDE — The subway system may be a far cry from the city’s high-end art galleries, but the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is still encouraging aspiring artists consider the 63rd Street F train station as their next canvas.

The agency put out an open call for artwork to integrate into the station's new open design when it eventually connects to the Second Avenue Subway currently under construction.

Artists can submit photos of their previous works to the MTA until March 30, after which a panel of architects and designers will choose the winning bid.

Ideas for the space, which was built in the 1980s, should reflect contemporary times and feature mosaic, glass, porcelain ceramic or stainless steel, the MTA said.

Over 200 original works of art, including designs from Elizabeth Murray and Robert Kushner, are featured throughout the transit system.

Construction of the Second Avenue Subway at 63rd Street is expected to begin in 2011.
