UPPER WEST SIDE— New Yorkers looking to get rid of broken or old electronic devices without harming the environment can drop them off for “e-recycling” on the Upper West Side this weekend.
City Councilwoman Gale Brewer is accepting any used electronics — except televisions — at her district office, located at 563 Columbus Ave. at 87th Street on Sunday. The office will be open from 10 a.m to 3 p.m for anyone wanting to unload the items safely.
New Yorkers have been encouraged to recycle electronics to keep hazardous materials from winding up in landfills and leaking dangerous chemicals into the soil and water.
The nonprofit group Per Scholas will refurbish any donated computers and pass them along to low-income communities as part of its goal to give 20,000 city kids free computers and computer training by 2012.
"People arrive with shopping carts full of computer equipment, people come in taxis, in their car," Brewer of a similar e-recycling event three years ago.
There are few places that accept the gear, prompting Brewer to host several events so far this year with more scheduled throughout the summer, she said.
