MIDTOWN — Not only did the weather trouble Upper West Side residents over the weekend, but a carbon monoxide leak and two fiery manhole explosions added to the misery.

About three dozen people were evacuated from their apartments on W. 76th Street, between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, because of a carbon monoxide leak, a fire department spokesman said.

The amount of carbon monoxide in the air read 100 parts per million with only 10 parts per million considered as lethal, according to the spokesman.

Firefighters responded about  3:30 p.m. and the situation was brought under control at 6 p.m.

The source of the leak of the potentially lethal gas was unknown last night, but the fire department said that high moister levels over the weekend was the probably cause.

Earlier in the weekend, the fire department and Consolidated Edison responded to an explosion that sent manhole covers flying on Saturday morning at W. 94th Street and Columbus Avenue, according to the fire department spokes person.

One car was set on fire and several other vehicles were damaged along the street, New York One reported.

The fire department blamed the weekend rain for the explosions.

No injuries were reported in either incident.
