BATTERY PARK CITY— With Little League season fast approaching, representatives from a local developer met with community members to discuss a safety plan to ensure no construction debris falls on the Battery Park City Ballfields.

Milstein Properties is building residential towers at 200 and 300 North End Avenue, both of which overlook the park. In February, a chunk of wood with nails in it fell from one of the towers and landed on the Battery Park City Ice Rink, which takes up the park in the winter.

No one was injured from the falling debris, but a stop-work order was issued by the Buildings Department.

While the origin of the wood piece hasn't been determined, Milstein has dispatched an additional security officer to be on the lookout for other falling pieces.

Maria Rosenfeld, a development advisor for Milstein, also said that weekend crane construction would be done away from the ball fields whenever possible. League games are played on weekends.

“We’re doing everything we can think of to ensure people’s safety,” said Rosenfeld.

But some members of the community were dubious.

“I’m a little taken aback that additional control wasn’t put into place,” Community Board 1 member Tom Goodkind said.
