GREENWICH VILLAGE — A gas leak has shut down businesses and a historic church on a busy thoroughfare in Greenwich Village while authorities investigate on Wednesday.

Con Edison learned of the leak on West 4th Street between Sixth Avenue and MacDougal on Wednesday morning, a Con Edison rep at the scene said. The cause and extent of the leak are currently under investigation.

No fires have been reported, but four fire trucks and more than 30 officers from the fire department were rushed to the scene just before 11 a.m. as a precaution, the rep for Con Ed added.

The historic Washington Square Methodist Church on the block has been temporarily shut down pending further assessments.

Business at local shops has all but stopped with pedestrian traffic redirected and investigations conducted inside half a dozen local stores — including Red Bamboo and Francesco Pizzeria.

“We’re not officially closed, but there are no lunch patrons here,” said Francesco Pizzeria manager Admundo Catuli. “Hopefully we’ll get calls for deliveries.”
