UPPER WEST SIDE — A popular Sunday farmers market on Columbus Avenue is applying to return for another year, despite some complaints from residents about idling trucks.

Greenmarket, the city organization that runs 46 farmers markets throughout the boroughs, will go before Community Board 7's Transportation Committee on Tuesday night and ask to renew a permit for the 77th Street Greenmarket for at least another year.

The market's operators are also hoping to extend its size an extra block to encompass Columbus Avenue, between 77th and 80th streets.

Michael Hurwitz, director of Greenmarket, admitted that not everyone on the Upper West side had been happy with the market.

"There were concerns about trucks being there, mostly parked on the curb side," Hurwitz said. "But there have not been complaints lately."

Hurwitz said he was hopeful that the community would support the expansion of the greenmarket up one block to 80th Street.

"If we are able to, we can bring in more diversity of produce, more vegetables that are not represented in the market," he said.

He appealed for the vegetable lovers of the Upper West Side to attend the meeting to show their support for the application to stay and expand.

"We think its been a great year and I think it is one of the greatest markets in our program," he said. "The meats, fish, strawberries. They are pretty spectacular."

Community Board 7's Transportation Committee meeting will take place on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at 250 W.87th St., at Broadway.
