BATTERY PARK CITY — Construction materials blew off of a building and on to a Battery Park City ice rink last week, raising safety concerns and drawing the ire of community members.

High winds caused a piece of plywood to blow off the 32-floor Liberty Luxe building site on North End Avenue on Jan. 28, according to the Department of Buildings.

The plywood landed on the ice skating rink nearby, but no one was injured. The rink was shut down for four days as a safety precaution.

“No matter what, there is no excuse for debris falling onto our ballfields from these construction sites,” said Battery Park City Committee Chairman Linda Belfer during a meeting Tuesday night.

The Liberty Luxe building is one of two towers, along with the 22-story Liberty Green building, being built adjacent to the Battery Park City ballfields by Milstein Properties.

“Having recreational parks in the middle of construction zones is dangerous,” said Battery Park City Committee member Tom Goodkind.

The committee has invited officials from Milstein Properties to their next meeting in March to answer questions about building safety.

The ballfield towers site is no stranger to accidents and violations. The building site, located at 200 North Ave., has racked up 19 violations since June 6, 2008, according to the Department of Buildings.

A constructon worker fell 16 feet off of one of the buildings water tanks while he was trying to water proof it on Jan. 21. The worker suffered serioius back and head injuries, the Downtown Express reported.
