MIDTOWN — In an effort to relieve overcrowding of classrooms on the Upper West Side, a new elementary school is being proposed that would be opened by the start of the next school year.

In a letter to parents, borough president Scott Stringer informed parents within School District 3 that the Department of Education had proposed the creation of the school at 100 W. 77th St.

The new school would be located within the MS 44 Anderson School complex at that location, Stringer said.

The new school will offer 75 seats for three kindergarten classes. The k-5 elementary school will eventually grown to accommodate 450, he said.

The proposal, according to Stringer, is the success of "Community School District 3 Overcrowding War Room meetings" that have targeted the overcrowding on the Upper West Side.

While the Department of Education has agreed to this proposal, Stringer said details of enrollment, classroom spaces and leadership of the new school were yet to be worked out.

But it appears the arrival of the new elementary school might mean that West Prep, a new middle school, may have to eventually be relocated. according to a report in the West Side Spirit.

The Anderson School will also have to reduce its classes from three to two.
