UPPER WEST SIDE — An Upper West Side community center has planned a day full of events Monday to honor the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.'s message.

The Jewish Community Center center on Amsterdam Avenue at West 76th Street will have activities going on all day culminating in an evening concert to remember the message and life of the famed civil rights leader.

"It is a great way to do something on Martin Luther King day that is thoughtful and provocative," said Karen Sander, the senior director of arts and culture at the center.

The center is expecting hundreds of people to participate in a variety of activities during the day from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.

The day's events all center on the idea of giving back to the community.

Many activities target young adults, including the prepartion of chicken soup with Chef Emily Klein from the boutique culinary instruction company Eat Well, Live Well. The meals prepared at the event will be delivered to a local seniors home.

There will plenty of arts and crafts and a bake sale with donations aiding cancer research. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a non-invasive bone marrow test that is being administered by Gift of Life, an organization that maintains a database for bone marrow matches.

The days events all lead up to a concert at 6:30 p.m. featuring Haitian violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain at the Peter Norton Symphony Space on Broadway at 95th Street. Organizers are hoping the music will inspire the community with the vision of Reverend King.

Other artists lined-up to perform include Grammy Award winners The Klezmatics and hip-hop artist Lemon Andersen, who is a regular on HBO’s "Def Poetry."
