MANHATTAN — A 33-year-old man was struck and killed by a southbound B train Monday night after he reportedly reached down to pick up something he'd dropped on the tracks.
The man, identified by police as Shen Herman, of Manhattan, was hit by the train as it entered the West 110 Street and Central Park West station about 7:30 p.m., police and NYC transit officials said.
The Daily News identified the object Herman was attempting to retrieve as an MP3 player.
"He went on the tracks for his MP3 player, picked it up, and stood up just in time for the train to hit him head on and drag him. He just wasn't quick enough," a police source told the News.
Tuesday morning, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority tweeted about jumping on the tracks.
"Please, stay off the tracks," the message read. "There is 600 volts of electricity down there. Drop something? Tell an employee, we'll get it."
The NYPD told DNAinfo that no criminality was suspected in the accident.
"I saw a guy sitting on the stairs talking on his cellphone, then I saw him leaning over the tracks watching for a train to come, when, all of a sudden, he was nowhere to be found," a witness told the Post.
