CHICAGO — City high schools prefer birds, at least when it comes to mascot selection.
According to a lengthy list of 162 Chicago public and private high schools from the Illinois High School Association, "Eagles" is the most popular name for a mascot.
Eleven city high schools have Eagles as their mascot, with Panthers, Warriors and Wildcats tying for the runner-up spot with seven each.
That's not surprising, considering in a poll USA Today found Eagles to be the nation's most common mascot name.
There are six Chicago high schools with Lions; and four high schools have Tigers, Mustangs or Titans as their mascot.
In terms of birds, Condors, Eagle Owls, Falcons, Fighting Owls, Firebirds, Hawks, Mighty Eagles, Soaring Falcons and Thunderbirds are all in at least one Chicago high school.
Some of the quirkier mascots include: Challengers (Carver); Cristeros (Cristo Rey Jesuit); Legends (EPIC Academy Charter); Masai Lions (Noble/Rowe-Clark); Sea Dragons (Rickover Naval Academy); and Sun Warriors (Solorio Academy).
