LINCOLN PARK — Molly, a geriatric Amur tiger who was increasingly experiencing "age-related discomfort and illnesses," was euthanized this week in what Lincoln Park Zoo staff called "the difficult but humane decision," according to an announcement Friday.
Molly was born at Lincoln Park Zoo Nov. 16, 1997, and spent all but three years there. She was euthanized Wednesday.
The zoo said she was the second-oldest female Amur tiger in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. At 18, Molly had outlived most female Amur tigers. The median life expectancy is 14.3 years.
“Despite her age, Molly would frequently roam her habitat and powerfully vocalize, much to the enjoyment of both staff and guests,” Dave Bernier, general curator for the zoo, said in a prepared statement.
“Over the years, Molly developed very strong, trusting bonds with her keepers and most enjoyed her time quietly lounging or exuding her playful side.”
The zoo was planning to take Molly and her counterpart, Pavel, off exhibit and bring in more lions as part of the Kovler Lion House renovation.
