BEVERLY — Several streets were shut down Friday evening as cyclists raced through portions of Beverly and Morgan Park.
The 14th annual Beverly Hills Cycling Classic brought hundreds of racers and spectators to the neighborhood. Beacon Therapeutic Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Beverly served as the primary viewing area for the event.
The therapeutic school at 10650 S. Longwood Dr. is located near the starting line. The race is laid out in a one-mile loop that runs between 105th and 108th Place on Longwood Drive, Seeley Avenue and Hoyne Avenue.
Six craft breweries were pouring beer in the spectator area alongside local food vendors including Calabria Imports of Beverly and 19 Paul of Morgan Park. The Roost Carolina Kitchen, a food truck, was also on hand.
After the final race, the "Bikes & Brews" festival featured music by Coyote Riot.
The Beverly bike race is the first stop in the Prairie State Cycling Series, which also includes races Monday in Logan Square, Thursday in South Chicago and concludes Sunday in West Town. Riders compete for the Intelligentsia Cup.
Beverly is unique among the other courses as racers are forced to climb a steep hill just past the starting line.
