EDGEWATER — The city's Plan Commission on Thursday approved the sale of some former Edgewater Medical Center buildings that will be sold later to the Chicago Park District as part of a redevelopment plan for the area.
The city acquired six parcels between 1623-25 W. Edgewater Ave. and 1628-30 W. Hollywood Ave. Thursday and simultaneously got permission to then sell the land to the Park District for development.
The land was bought from MCZ Development, which earlier bought and demolished the former hospital's parking garage.
In May, Ald. Patrick O'Connor (40th) said the land would be developed into a park and completed by MCZ before being sold to the Park District, but no demolition permits have been issued to knock down the remaining medical center buildings on those properties.
Neighborhood groups near the building, including the West Edgewater Area Residents Association, have called for a green space in the area for years.
The park is just one piece of an ongoing redevelopment project of the former medical center, which includes an apartment complex, the reuse of existing buildings and new single-family homes projected to sell for more than $1 million each.
