BRIDGEPORT — The Blackhawks' logo has been dubbed the NHL's best.
Now Chicago's hockey fans in several neighborhoods can eat a pizza in the shape and color scheme of their favorite team's emblem on playoff game days.
Punky's Pizza and Pasta, 2600 S. Wallace St. in Bridgeport, has created the "Blackhawks Pizza" — a 16-inch pie that has been molded into the team's Blackhawks logo, turning pizza dough into a stoic Chief Black Hawk.
The pizza debuted Friday prior to the Blackhawks' 5-2 Game 1 victory over the Minnesota Wild at United Center. Game 2 is Sunday on the Near West Side. The Hawks and Wild faceoff at 2 p.m. Sunday for Game 2.
"We're just doing it for the fun of it, and we're doing it to show our support for the Blackhawks more than anything," said Punky's owner Vince Scarlata, of Bridgeport, who said his place sold about 20 Hawks pizzas Friday.
The pizza, which sells for $18.95, is topped by mozzarella cheese, plus black olives used for the logo's hair and eye and peppers representing its multi-colored feathers and earring.
Pizzas are available for pick-up, and the restaurant's delivery area runs from North Avenue to 39th Street and the lakefront to Western Avenue.
Scarlata said the pizza, which was the brainchild of Punky's manager Bobby Phillips, will be available for purchase only on game days. The pizza is not cut into slices, he said.
"We don't want to ruin the opportunity for them to take their picture with it," Scarlata said.
It's not the first time a Chicago pizza place developed a Blackhawks-friendly pie. After the Hawks won last year's NHL title, Felice's Roman Style Pizza in Rogers Park created a pizza in the shape of the Stanley Cup.
