HARLEM — A young man was seriously injured Tuesday just steps from his home when he was struck by a car as he crossed a Harlem street to buy a soda, fire officials said.
The unidentified man was taken to Harlem Hospital in serious condition after the accident, which occurred about 1:30 p.m. on 129th Street and Fifth Avenue, according to FDNY officials.
Witnesses said the driver of the green van that hit the man stayed on the scene after the incident.
"I heard the shrieking tires and heard some people scream," said Monique Donohue, 45, who saw the accident from her apartment on 129th Street. "I looked out and [the victim] was rolling [away from the] front of the vehicle."
When Donohue ran outside, she said the man, who she knows from the block, was conscious and told her he was crossing the street to buy a soda. He had scrapes on the right side of his forehead and his elbows were cut, she said.
"The drivers were really rattled, really shaken up," Donohue said. "They felt really bad and said, 'He just came out of nowhere.'"
