LOWER MANHATTAN — Ten days after tumbling off a bike in Puerto Rico, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver checked into a hospital on Sunday to get treatment for an infection in his right knee.

Silver, 67, will remain hospitalized through to Wednesday for a series of "minor procedures" in which doctors will make incisions in his knee to "drain and clean up the infection," Silver's office said Monday.

Silver hurt his right knee on Nov. 10, when he hit a pothole while biking around San Juan, where he was visiting for a legislative conference. He received stitches for cuts on his knee and his face and also scraped his hands, according to a spokesman and reports.

"I’m embarrassed by the whole thing," Silver told The New York Times last week.

Silver returned to work after the accident, telling the Times that he looked worse than he felt.

But the cut to his knee became infected, and on Sunday Silver checked into Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, which he chose so that he could be treated by his nephew Dr. Marc D. Silver, an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon.

Silver's office said on Monday that the speaker was working from his hospital room for the next couple of days and would resume his normal public schedule after Thanksgiving.

Silver was expected to make a full recovery, his office said.
