Bargain Hunters and Fashionistas Flock to New Uniqlo Flagship Store

By Jill Colvin | October 14, 2011 4:01pm

MIDTOWN — Massive crowds descended on Fifth Avenue Friday to celebrate the grand opening of Uniqlo’s flagship store — and to score $10 jeans.

As part of its opening promotion, the mammoth new store, at West 53rd Street, is offering a selection of its coveted "Japanese engineered denim" jeans for $9.90.

It is not clear how long the bargain will last, but the deal was enough to draw fans from across the country, who lined up around the block and waited for hours Friday morning to be the first to step foot inside the gleaming mega shop.

“Their jeans are amazing!” raved Eric Soto, 29, who was visiting the city from San Francisco, and was in line by 9 a.m. ahead of the noon opening to take advantage of the deal.

In addition to the denim, he also planned to stock up on other “very cool basics” — the store’s staple.

Ahead of the opening, the store held a ribbon-cutting which was attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and actress Susan Sarandon, as well as Uniqlo execs.

Brooklyn’s Rakim Garel, 21, took the day off from work for the chance to score not one, but two coveted finds.

He began the day at midnight, lining up outside the Apple store in SoHo and camping out overnight in the rain to be among the first to buy the new iPhone when the store opened at 8 a.m.

“When we walked in it was like the end scene of 'The Titanic.' The whole store was clapping,” he said. Then he headed over to Uniqlo to cap off his shopping spree.

“I want those jeans!” he said. “I want my Japanese engineered jeans and my Heat Tech shirts!”
