UPPER MANHATTAN — Community Board 12 plans to host a forum on the addition of bike lanes in Inwood and Washington Heights in June after months of planning and debate.

The board’s Traffic and Transportation committee, which received a preliminary proposal to add more bike lanes in the CB12 district back in October, said they wanted more community input before recommending the plan to the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The plan, drafted by the Inwood/Washington Heights chapter of Livable Streets, calls for several changes to the Northern Manhattan biking landscape, including extending the Greenway path along the Hudson River to the northern tip of Manhattan, adding bike lanes throughout Inwood and Washington Heights and making the the bike lane on Dyckman Street protected, so cyclists won't be forced to ride in traffic due to double-parked cars and congestion.

Livable Streets created an online petition to show growing support for the lanes in Upper Manhattan. To date it has 886 signatures.

The DOT said last year it would consider implementing changes to the Northern Manhattan landscape after it hears input from CB12.

Representatives from city agencies, including the Manhattan Borough President’s Office, DOT and the 33rd and 34th Precincts, as well as advocacy and community groups such as Transportation Alternatives, Livable Streets, Pedestrians for Accessible Safety, the Association of Dominican Cyclists, have been invited to participate.

Community members will also be given a chance to voice concerns and support during a public session.

The forum will be held at 6:30 on Thursday, June 16, at the ARC XVI Ft. Washington Senior Center, 4111 Broadway. The entrance is on West 174th Street, between Broadway and Ft. Washington Avenue.
