SOHO — Apple's SoHo store may be expanding into an empty post office, Racked reported Tuesday.

Apple has reportedly signed its name on a lease at a space located around the corner from Apple's Prince Street location. The company was also granted building permits to do work in their current first floor and basement space, but it was unclear whether this work was related to the reported expansion.

Soho Alliance president Sean Sweeney said that Apple was indeed moving into the nearby post office space, and said that the company was making an effort not to disrupt the neighborhood with the construction work.

"At our request, they said they would not use Green St as a main entrance, in order to preserve the more quiet character of Greene St, versus Prince." Sweeney said in an email. "They have been gutting the inside of the old PO for over two weeks."

Sweeney said he wasn't sure when the new store would open.

The expansion would increase the store's square footage by approximately 5,000 square feet, according to Racked.

A permit was issued on Feb. 22 for demolition work in the basement of the Apple's building at 103 Prince Street, according Department of Buildings.
