THE BRONX — The borough is booming with baby bison.
Six American bison calves were born at the Bronx Zoo recently, four of which are now on exhibit, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The calves were born in late April to a herd of seven females and one male that came to the borough from Montana in November. The pack was a gift from the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes, officials said.
"These calves will bolster our efforts to expand our breeding program of pure bison," Pat Thomas, the associate director of the Bronx Zoo, said in a statement.
The animals will eventually be bred with pure bison at other zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, "to provide animals for restoration programs in the American West," he added.
The zoo has been trying to develop a herd of pure bison through embryo transfer, but the ones from Montana will supplement those efforts, officials said.
